High Tea becomes a Holiday Tradition
Once a year at Christmas,
a few Washington women stop the whirlwind of their busy lives to enjoy fine teas,
English delicacies and lively conversation together. The "Sweet-Teas,"
a name affectionately given by one of the regular attendees, held their Annual
Holiday Tea at the Mayflower Hotel on December 15, 2001. The practice began
six years ago when Washington natives, Dr. Karyn Berry, Ms. Stacy Green and Dr.
Debra Henry conceived the idea as a way to spend time with one another after Christmas
and prior to New Year's Eve. The inaugural event was held at the Willard Hotel
in Downtown Washington. In addition to these three ladies, Ms. Carla Chissell,
Ms. Diane Jones, Ms. Tamar Meekins, and Ms. Brigette Tenor were in attendance
at that first tea. Mrs. Beverly Ross and Mrs. Evita Smedly have since made this
a part of their holiday festivities. This year the "Sweet-Teas" welcomed
the addition of Ms. Marge Britt and her guests. This Sixth Annual Holiday Tea
featured a gift exchange to commemorate Christmas, as well as a landmark birthday
that many of the ladies share in common and will celebrate during the upcoming
months. Each year, the "Sweet-Teas" host the event at a different
venue in the District to compare and contrast High Tea experiences and enjoy various
food and beverage presentations. More than 20 other women have attended the event
since its inception. Although the members of this gathering will not have the
opportunity to reunite until the next Christmas Season, the "Sweet-Teas"
will recall their fond memories of sharing tea and camaraderie all year long.
